Dear Shola,

It’s OK to be different. It’s OK to yearn for something different to your friends and family, as your individuality is an asset not a hindrance. Carry on listening to Roxy Music loud and proud, irrespective of the ridicule you’ll get from ‘friends’ who make you feel bad for not being that into the new Ja Rule single.

Education is important but it’s not the be all and end all. You’ll learn so much from meeting different people from different walks of life and you’ll cherish those moments.

Family is key. Don’t forget them and don’t put them on the back burner for other people, because you’ll need them through the good times and the bad. Always listen to those who are older, they know a thing or two about how life works.

Work hard. It’s the only way you’ll make it. By all means cut the odd corner, but when it really matters, knowledge is power. If you can do it today, don’t leave it until tomorrow.

Read more, absorb more and look around you. Stop burying your head in things that don’t really matter. Persevere, but know when to stop.

Always listen to that buzzing sound in your head called your conscience, it’s the greatest guide you’ll ever have. Taking advice from people is good, but always listen to your inner self – you’ll be less resentful of people this way.

Accountability is everything.  Don’t blame your mistakes on other people, be friendly, thoughtful and willing to help others but DON’T give to receive.

Boys will distract you. Be distracted, but don’t lose your head and forget your priorities. The world isn’t going to end if you are rejected, this will happen but it will all be OK! You’ll find someone who loves you for you, warts ‘n’ all.

Timing is everything, be patient and don’t compare yourself to others as everyone has their own path. It will happen if you want it badly enough.

In the end if you haven’t achieved all you can achieve, don’t fret – just carry on each day being the best version of yourself.
