Why I’m Not Taking Part In The #KylieJennerChallenge

The #KylieJennerChallenge sees teenagers going to extreme measures to achieve fuller lips. Megan, 15 tells us why she is sitting this trend out.

After continuously denying having lip injections, Kylie Jenner has recently admitted on an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, that she has had temporary lip fillers saying: “It was just something I wanted to do.”

Although it is understandable that she would feel insecure about certain things, as her family is constantly in the limelight Kylie is only 17. She is a role model for a lot of young teenage girls that may start to believe they also need lip fillers to achieve ‘perfection’.

As a 15 year old girl, I believe everyone, but young people in particular, look to celebrities for the latest fashion advice, and even body inspiration. A lot of features celebrities portray on magazines and Instagram cannot be achieved naturally.

Kylie’s new lips sparked a worrying trend called the #KylieJennerChallenge, which is sweeping Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms- it is trending almost every other day!

By following the hashtag, you will see a countless number of (mostly) teenage girls, sharing the disturbing results which in many cases has led to severe bruising. The results are said to last hours and even days.

The method, (which is apparently painful) involves placing your mouth over the opening of a cup, bottle, or shot glass and sucking until the air vacuum causes your lips to swell up -hoping to achieve fuller lips like Kylie.

You can even buy a small lip enhancer online, which is a shaped piece of plastic designed to work in the same way as the challenge. Whilst it seems safer, instead of leaving the outside of your mouth badly bruised it can cause your actual lips to be bloodied and bruised.

Personally, I would never take part in the challenge because it leaves your face looking ridiculously out of proportion. The results and reactions are funny for now, but it won’t be when people’s lips are falling off.
